George R. R. Martin reveals HBO Max & Discovery+ merger has affected the Game of Thrones franchise – “A couple have been shelved”

Game of Thrones author George R.R. Martin revealed that some of the GoT projects have been impacted at HBO Max amidst its merger with Discovery+.

According to Entertainment Weekly, Martin revealed in a blog post shared Wednesday that a couple projects “have been shelved” amidst the restructuring however he “would not agree that they are dead.” The creator began his blog post by sharing, “I did take a few days off for the holidays, I confess. Shame on me, I guess.”

“But now I am back in the salt mine, working… working on so many bloody things, my head may soon explode,” he wrote before adding updates on season 2 of the blockbuster House of the Dragon and The Winds of Winter novel, “Yes, WINDS OF WINTER, yes, yes. And HOUSE OF THE DRAGON, season two. And several of the other successor shows that we’re developing with HBO.”

He further explains that, “Some of those are moving faster than others, as is always the case with development. None have been greenlit yet, though we are hoping… maybe soon. A couple have been shelved, but I would not agree that they are dead. You can take something off the shelf as easily as you can put it on the shelf. All the changes at HBO Max have impacted us, certainly.”

In his blogpost, Martin did not specifically update on which GoT projects have been shelved and which ones are still alive. He has reportedly signed a five-year overall deal with HBO Max in 2021, before the merger, and serves as an executive producer on House of the Dragon along with his manager Vince Gerardis. However, it seems that the Jon Snow sequel series is still alive with star Kit Harington reportedly set to reprise the role.

Other projects seemingly in the works include the Tales of Dunk and Egg series; The Sea Snake (formerly titled Nine Voyages) series centered on House of the Dragon character Corlys Velaryon; the 10,000 Ships series and three animated series, one of which is titled The Golden Empire.
