Priyanka Chopra’s Met Gala dress took 1500 hours to create

As one of the biggest red carpet events in the world, the Met Gala is a huge international platform for both the celebrities that attend and the designers who dress them – so hours of painstaking preparation go into the creation of each look.

Priyanka Chopra was one of the guests invited to attend the prestigious event last night, and this year she was dressed by Dior for the occasion. The actress arrived on the arm of her new husband Nick Jonas, wearing a dramatic caged dress with cascading rainbow feathered skirt and cape – perfectly in keeping with 2019’s theme of ‘Camp: Notes on Fashion’; an ode to all things extravagant and exaggerated.

The spectacular couture gown and cape were made from tulle, featuring embroideries of tulle feathers and silver strass. Each of the feathers was cut by hand and then attached in graded layers, going from grey and blush pink to bolder yellow, fuchsia and fiery red.

The caged bodice of the dress was created from tulle and silver horsehair. A team of 10 petites-mains worked on the dress for a total of 1500 hours.

“It’s all part of the ‘camp’ theme for the Met Gala,” explained Jean Eudes from Dior’s Vermont embroidery atelier, adding that the dress was inspired by “those American television series of the 1980s… a very affected style, this whole idea of ‘more, more and more’. But always chic. Always extremely chic.”

The look was finished with an incredible Dior Haute Couture palladium crown which sat atop Chopra’s teased voluminous curls.
