Sundance Film Festival: Anne Hathaway recalls being asked by a journalist ‘If she was a good or a bad girl’ when she was 16

Oscar-winning actress Anne Hathaway shared an uncomfortable incident from her early teen days in her career when she was asked by press if she was a “good girl or a bad girl” when she was just 16. The actress took the mic following the world premiere of her new film, Eileen.

As shared by The Hollywood Reporter, after saying how honored she is to be a part of William Oldroyd’s film alongside Thomasin McKenzie, Shea Whigham, Marin Ireland and Owen Teague, Hathway went onto speak about the incident while participating in a Q&A session following Eileen’s premiere.

“I just remembered one of the very first questions I ever got asked when I started acting and had to do press was: Are you a good girl or a bad girl?” Hathaway shared. “I was 16. And my 16-year-old self-wanted to respond with this film. Though I did not know that when I read the script, I think a part of me hoped for this exact moment.”

The actress brought up the incident as she talked about her eager to work with Eileen director William Oldroyd after watching the 2016 drama Lady Macbeth, starring Florence Pugh. “I thought it was extraordinary work. I saw a study of female complication that hit me really, really deep, and I felt like Will was a filmmaker that could be trusted to tell complicated stories, especially about females.”

Eileen is a psychological drama based on the book of the same name by Ottessa Moshfegh. Directed by William Oldroyd, the film follows a woman’s friendship with a new co-worker at the prison facility where she works takes a sinister turn. The film was adapted for the screen by the original novel’s author Ottessa Moshfegh and Luke Goebel.
