Producer Jon Landau shares new details on Avatar sequels; Oona Chaplin to play Fire Na’vi leader in Avatar 3, Avatar 4 to have time leap and Avatar 5 set on Earth

James Cameron’s Avatar: The Way of Water performed well in theaters, and the filmmaker is already ready with parts of its sequel. Producer Jon Landau recently shared what fans can expect from the next three sequels. Cameron had previously teased that Avatar 3 would introduce a darker version of Na’vi. According to Variety, Landau shared in a new interview with Empire magazine that group is called the Ash People, and described them as “an aggressive, volcanic race” of Na’vi. The group’s leader is Varang, played by Charlie Chaplin’s granddaughter Oona Chaplin.

“There are good humans and there are bad humans,” Landau shared. “It’s the same thing on the Na’vi side. Oftentimes, people don’t see themselves as bad. What is the root cause of how they evolve into what we perceive as bad? Maybe there are other factors there that we aren’t aware of.”

As the report shares, Chaplin previously praised the successful Avatar franchise in 2018 and described it as “Trojan horse cinema” in context to Cameron’s big budget filmmaking “to explore things that he finds important…like our relationship with nature, our relationship with people, our relationship with ourselves and the spirit.”

In the recent interview, Landau also revealed that there will be “a big time jump” for Avatar 4, leading into Avatar 5 and its partial setting on Earth. The producer previously confirmed in Gizmodo interview that Part 5 would move to Earth saying, “We go to it to open people’s eyes, open Neytiri’s eyes, to what exists on Earth.”

Landau went on to share with Empire that “there’s over-population and a depletion of our natural resources that make life harder” in Avatar’s Earth. “But we don’t want to paint a bleak picture for where our world is going,” the producer added. “The films are also about the idea that we can change course.”
