The much-awaited film, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, was finally released on Netflix on December 23. The film has been widely discussed not just for its unexpected twists and turns and performances but also its location. Most of the film is set in a luxurious villa in Greece and many viewers couldn’t help but marvel at this wonderful shooting location. It has now come to light that the villa, where Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery was filmed, is available for accommodation for tourists. As expected, it costs a bomb.
In the film, the villa was located on the fictional Greek island called Pisceshite Island. In reality, the resort, called Amanzoe, is situated in mainland Greece, in a town called Kranidi. The nearest airport is Athens, which is nearly 200 kms away.
Amanzoe has villas of several sizes. While the smallest one has just one room, Villa 20, where Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery was filmed, has as many as 9 rooms, six swimming pools, a private spa and a breath-taking view of the Aegean Sea. It can house up to 18 guests. As expected, the ‘Glass Onion’ structure is not present and was added by the makers through VFX as per the storyline. But the indoor living hall, poolside area, gymnasium, the sculpture by the pool and the sprawling staircase (where a murder takes place in the film) are very much present on the site. The only portion not shot in Amanzoe was the dining table sequence. Production designer Rick Heinrichs revealed that it was filmed in a studio in Belgrade, located in the country of Serbia.
The website of Amanzoe has put up some stunning pictures of Villa 20. However, it hasn’t mentioned the rate and it asks guests to reach out to them for the tariff plans. An Evening Standard article in April 2016, however, reported that it is available for €25,000 a night in the peak summer season. In other words, one has to shell out Rs. 22.05 lakhs for a night to rent Villa 20. In the off-season, it’s available for €15,000 (Rs. 13.23 lakhs) a night. Since these are 2016 rates, the prices must have shot up in these 6 years. As per the Evening Standard report, Villa 20 was built in 2015.
The Amanzoe website, however, has mentioned the prices of its lower-end rooms. The Pool Pavilion is available for $1784 (Rs. 1.47 lakhs) a night. The Deluxe Pool Pavilion can be rented for $1889 (Rs. 1.56 lakhs) a night. The Pool Pavilion Sea View and Deluxe Pool Pavilion Sea View are available for $2047 (Rs. 1.69 lakhs) and $2152 (Rs. 1.78 lakhs) a night respectively. All these rooms measure 2260 sq ft. The aforementioned prices include breakfast for 2 and exclude taxes and fees.
Amanzoe is owned by Aman Resorts and is known for running 34 stunning properties across the world. In India, they have two properties, namely Aman-i-Khas near Ranthambore National Park, Rajasthan and Amanbagh at Ajabgarh, Rajasthan. The latter is two located two hours away from Jaipur. The starting rates at both these hotels are in the range of Rs. 1 lakh to Rs. 1.50 lakhs a night.
Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery stars Daniel Craig, Edward Norton, Janelle Monáe, Kathryn Hahn, Leslie Odom Jr, Jessica Henwick, Madelyn Cline, Kate Hudson and Dave Bautista. A sequel to the 2019 film Knives Out, it tells the story of a group of friends meeting on an island for a weekend and things taking an ugly turn.
