Austin Butler, who took home the Globe award for Best Performance by an Actor in drama film Elvis, addressed the online backlash for his deep, Elvis-like voice. As Variety notes, Austin Butler’s voice became a major topic of discussion following his acceptance speech at the Golden Globes. Social media erupted with questions on why Butler still talks in Elvis accent. “It’s hard for me to talk about,” Butler told E! News on the Globes carpet when asked about his voice not being the same after working on Elvis. “I can’t really reflect on it too much. I don’t know the difference.”
Many international tabloids also published pieces on the hot topic like “Will Austin Butler ever stop talking like Elvis?,” the Today show asked in an article, while the New York Post headlined a piece: “Butler’s ‘cringe’ fake voice at the 2023 Golden Globes called out.” The actor was asked again about his voice by the press backstage at the Golden Globes. “I don’t think I sound like him still, but I guess I must because I hear it a lot,” he said.
“I often liken it to when somebody lives in another country for a long time,” Butler added. “I had three years where [Elvis] was my only focus in life, so I’m sure there’s just pieces of my DNA that will always be linked in that way.” Butler also paid tribute to Presley during his acceptance speech saying, “You were an icon and a rebel, and I love you so much. You are remembered and I will never forget.”
Meanwhile, Butler was critically praised for his performance in the recently acclaimed Elvis biopic. While this time he named the Globe to himself, the actor is also up for best actor at the Critic’s Choice Awards and the Screen Actors Guild Awards. He’s also expected to nab an Oscar nomination.
